Welcome to Caye Caulker!

Thursday July 20, 2006
The Belizean island of Caye Caulker holds a Lobsterfest every July, and I was lucky enough to attend this year's event. In boisterous celebration of the yearly harvest, visitors and locals enjoy music, dancing, frozen drinks, the crowning of Miss Lobsterfest, and of course, lobster - in every culinary form imaginable.

Lobster ceviche. Deep-fried lobster nuggets. Lobster tacos. Lobster burritos. Barebecued lobster. Lobster kabobs. Even lobster ice cream, which wasn't a personal favorite.

To help newbies navigate this wonderful island, I've uploaded an illustrated Caye Caulker walking tour. I can't possibly recommend it more. Caye Caulker is like Ambergris Caye twenty years ago, before the big resorts and condo developments, and you'll never find a more relaxing destination.

I was there this past July (2007) and had an absolute blast – swimming in the crystal clear water, reading on a hammock, meeting backpackers and then… EATING all the lobster I could handle while hanging with Miss Lobsterfest herself! If you’re planning to be in Belize around this time, it’s definitely worth a stop over!
