Christmas in Central America

Friday December 22, 2006
Because Central America's countries are largely Catholic, Christmas is a vibrant holiday in the isthmus.

Many Christmas traditions in Central America resemble those in the United States, but many others differ significantly. For example, because Belize is such a multicultural nation, the holiday is lively with Garifuna dancers and Creole Christmas songs. Tamales are a Christmas dinner staple in Guatemala, Nicaragua and El Salvador. In Costa Rica, Santa Claus doesn't bring Christmas presents--they are said to be brought by Baby Jesus!
