President Bush Arrives in Guatemala
According to The New York Times, on Monday he'll head to Chimaltenango to discuss the Central American Free Trade Agreement (Cafta), which he believes will ultimately improve the working conditions of Guatemala's poor. In a speech before his departure, Bush stated that aid from the American government has helped raise the percentage of Guatemalan children who complete the first grade from 51 percent to 71 percent--a big change, though the figures are still distressing.
However noble his intentions, the president faced a mixed reception in Guatemala. Dozens of people protested his arrival in Guatemala City. And according to ABC News and numerous other sources, Mayan indians in the city of Tecpan plan to perform a cleansing ceremony after he visits the ancient Iximche ruins Monday, to clear any "bad energy."
