Leonardo DiCaprio to Open Green Hotel in Belize

Friday October 5, 2007
According to IMDB.com, Leonardo DiCaprio has struck a deal with the owners of The Four Seasons chain to construct an environmentally-friendly, or "green" hotel in Belize. He plans to built it on his 104-acre Belizean island, Blackadore Caye, located a few miles west of Ambergris Caye.

Says Ambergris Today, "the design of the hideaway – including the use of renewable energy sources – will respect the island’s wildlife and tropical surroundings." Because Blackadore Caye is so long and thin, it will easily accommodate an airstrip. The island boasts Belize's famous white sands (at right) and turquoise waters, with the Belize Barrier Reef just half an hour a way by boat.

Sounds great -- book me a room! Groundbreaking is said to begin in 2008.

(1) Dave Jorgensen says:

Blackadore Caye is a terrible island, located in what’s called the “mud flats”. The water is very shallow and the bottom is (you guessed it) muddy. I ran aground several times, trying to get out to see it several years ago. The island had been for sale for many, many years when DiCaprio came along (”a fool and his money are soon parted”).

The island is so narrow that, by the time they get the airstrip in, there won’t be any room for a decent resort. A proper airstrip takes a width of 100 meters to allow for the “safety zone”. Blackadore is about 200 meters wide.
