A Spooky Photo of Nim Li Punit, Belize

Wednesday November 5, 2008
Halloween's already long-forgotten -- probably because of a certain important event that occurred in the week since-- but I still thought I'd post one of my spookiest Central America photos: a tomb in the Nim Lin Punit ruins of Belize.

Nim Li Punit sits in the hills below Belize's Maya Mountains, and boasts panoramic views over Belize's coastal lowlands to the Caribbean. Archaeologists believe the Nim Li Punit ruins served as a trading center in the ancient Mayan culture between the 4th and 8th centuries AD, housing 5000 to 7000 people.

Central America's Mayan ruins are always mysterious places, from massive sites like Tikal in Guatemala, to smaller ones like Lubaantun in Belize. In particular, the excavated tomb depicted in my photo sure gave me the creeps. See more images of Nim Li Punit in our Nim Li Punit Photo Gallery.
