Because of the tilt of Ambergris Caye, the Belize Barrier Reef runs extremely close to shore in the north part of the island. As a result, the diving, snorkeling and fishing at the Tranquility Bay Resort are extraordinary.
Fishing folk can troll for hours--we did, and I caught my first fish, a barracuda(!!)—or anchor inside the reef for a leisurely afternoon. All three members of the celebrated "Belize Grand Slam" can be caught near Tranquility Bay: tarpon, bonefish and permit, all of which must be caught in a single day to earn the designation.
