The Nim Li Punit ruins, though smaller than other Maya ruin sites in Belize, are home to twenty-six stelae. Some are housed in the small onsite museum, while others remain among the ruins themselves. Several are unfinished. Nim Li Punit means "Big Hat" in the local Maya Kekchi language, reflecting a royal figure with a large headdress carved on the site's largest stele.
Archaeologists believe the Nim Li Punit ruins served as a trading center in the ancient Mayan culture between the 4th and 8th centuries AD, and housed 5000 to 7000 people. Important landmarks at the Nim Li Punit site include a ball court, a series of tombs, and the Plaza of the Stelae, where the twenty-six stelae were found.
