Belize Cayes: A Belize Vacation

The Belize Cayes

Kirsten Hubbard
Whether your version of an island paradise includes the lively streets of San Pedro Town, the languid sunbathing docks of Caye Caulker, or a hammock on a private luxury isle, the Belize cayes and atolls are one of the most compelling reason to visit the Caribbean nation. Though visiting all 450 of the Belize Cayes would be pretty difficult, this Belize itinerary takes you through some of the most popular ones.
Belize City to Caye Caulker:
Fly into Belize City. Most people visit the northern cayes via the Caye Caulker Water Taxi Association's ferries, which depart for San Pedro (1 ½ hours, $10 each way)and Caye Caulker (45 min, $7.50 each way) from the Marine Terminal in Belize City several times a day. You can also choose to fly via Tropic Air or Mayan Air. Spend a few days soaking in Caye Caulker's famously relaxing vibe.
Caye Caulker to San Pedro:
Hop back on the Water Taxi for San Pedro Town on Ambergris Caye. Compared to Caye Caulker, San Pedro is thumping with life, while the island's northern regions offer a few unspoiled sections of sand. If you're spending more than a couple days on Ambergris Caye, check out our La Isla Bonita itinerary.
Belize City to Dangriga:
Ferry (or fly!) back to Belize City and head south—via public bus or plane—to Dangriga, one of Belize's bigger towns and the birthplace of punta rock. Belize's southern Cayes are accessible from here. Though boats leave daily, departures are leisurely, and you'll probably want to contact your Tobacco Caye or South Water Caye hotel ahead of time to arrange transportation. Conservation-minded travelers should check out the IZE Belize lodge.
South Water Caye & Tobacco Caye:
Ten-acre Tobacco Caye is so tiny, you can walk around the island in just a few minutes. Yet somehow, a number of small hotels (such as Reef's End Lodge) and laid-back locals make their home here. The larger South Water Caye is farther out and more exclusive than Tobacco Caye, but just as idyllic.
Other Belize Cayes to Visit:
In the north, take an overnight trip to Turneffe Flats on the impossibly biodiverse Turneffe Atoll. Caye Chapel draws high-end visitors with an on-island golf-course. In the south, unwind at Glover's Atoll Resort on Belize's most remote coral atoll.
