The next day, the staff of Machaca Hill Lodge brought us to beautiful Blue Creek, a striking freshwater creek colored blue by rainforest minerals. The climax of a Blue Creek expedition is a large cave, through which intrepid hikers can swim in total darkness.

After we left Blue Creek, we visited the nearby Mayan ruins of Nim Li Punit and Lubaantun, each with its own unique architecture and purpose.
