I am halfway through the Maruba Resort & Jungle Spa’s famous Mood Mud Massage, which has been featured in every possible travel publication, including Caribbean Travel + Life, Spa Finder, and now, About.com. It’s also been showcased on television shows like Temptation Island and Wheel of Fortune( (really!). Naturally, I had to indulge.
Once I am thoroughly coated in gritty, mineral-rich slime, my massage therapist begins to daub muddy splotches of a different type all over my body. I close my eyes, to intensify my anticipation. But when he affixes a banana leaf to my lower parts – a la Eve, in the tropics – I begin to giggle. Next come the hibiscus flowers. And now, the camera.
