- Independence Day: September 15th is a big day, not only in Costa Rica, but in most of Central America (all countries but Panama and Belize). On September 15th, 1821, the region declared independence from the Spanish crown. As a result, on and around that date Costa Rica erupts into patriotic celebration. Fantastically, on the 14th a torch is carried by relay race from Guatemala, where it arrives in Costa Rica on the 15th.
