Definition:
A stele (plural: stelae) is a tall, carved stone slab, constructed to honor a person or an event. Ancient stelae are found all over the world: Ethiopia, Greece, Egypt, China, and Scotland. However, stelae are still in use today—the modern gravestone is a type of stele.

Stelae are numerous among the Maya ruins of Central America. The portrait stelae of the ancientCopan ruins in western Honduras are some of the most intricate and well-preserved in the world.
