Mayan Child in Panajachel

A short walk eastward on Calle de la Playa leads to the Panajachel embarcadero, or the main dock in Panajachel. Here is where boats, or “lanchas”, depart to the other lakefront Maya villages like Santiago Atitlan and San Pedro la Laguna. Whether you’re venturing across the lake or not, you’ll likely be accosted by locals working for the boat captains, who will usher you to the boats in you express interest. Passage to any village costs twenty Quetzales, or about $2.50 USD.

Friendly local children also stroll along the streets, peddling textiles and jewelry from their parents’ shops.
