A Caye Caulker Dock

Kirsten Noelle Hubbard
Two weeks is longer than you think: From the Caribbean cayes in Belize to the ancient Mayan ruins at Tikal, this Central America travel itinerary is wonderfully varied and exciting.
3-4 Days - Arrival and Ambergris Caye, Belize: Fly into Belize City. Try to arrive early in the day, and either catch a plane or a water taxi out to San Pedro, Ambergris Caye. Snorkel, scuba, sunbathe, and visit outlying cayes.
3-4 Days – Caye Caulker, Belize: Take a water taxi from San Pedro to Caye Caulker. Again, Snorkel, scuba, sunbathe, and visit outlying cayes.
2 Days – Ancient Mayan Ruins, Belize: Take a water taxi back to Belize City. Many of the city’s travel agents will gladly book tours of Maya ruins Altun Ha or Lamanai. If you prefer to navigate yourself, take a bus to Orange Walk Town, and book a Lamanai riverboat tour and guide from there.
2 Days – San Ignacio, Belize: Return to Belize City. Take a bus out to San Ignacio (Cayo), Belize’s adventure sport mecca, right on the border of Guatemala.
3 Days – Tikal, Guatemala and Departure: Book a tour from San Ignacio across the border to the fantastic Maya ruins of Tikal. You may also take a bus to Flores, Guatemala, and book a tour to Tikal from there. Bus back into Belize City for departure.
Travel Tip: You can always reverse the route if you prefer to save the beach for last.
